Brooding Waterfowl

Shelter is need for day old waterfowl. A brooder is much like incubators. Brooders can range from expensive meatal brooders to coardboard boxes with a 60 watt buld. Making a brooder is very easy. Since waterfowl are very messy, you will need a brooder that is easy to clean. A kiddy pool is perfect. The brooder should be cleaned at least once a day.

Heating is very imporntant for the first few weeks of life. Water fowl don't need as much warmth as other birds, but they do need a little extra warmth espeacilly at night, for the first week. Provide a heat lamp, with a temperature of 90 - 95 for the first week.  After the first week, the temp can be dropped ten degrees each week and by the time the young birds are a month old (Depending on species), usally need not heat.

Water is very imporntatnt part of brooding. For the first few 3 days add 4 tbs. of suger per gallon of water. Clean and refill water daily to keep clean. If you have day old birds that came from a hatchery, dip there beak into the water (this helps the bird to know whats water)

All  Water fowl can drown easily, so only a shallow dish of water should be used. Never put day old ducklings or gooslings in a pond or deep water. The mother has a natural oil and gives it to its babies. With out the oil, the chicks can drown. After 3 weeks of age, duckling and gooslings should start making their own oil, and be safe to swim in deep water.

Feeding your waterfowl, you going to have to make a trip to your local feed store. A duck starter or chicken strater (MUST BE UNMEDICATED) Don't worry if you have a tiny baby that won't eat.  They are nourished by the egg yolk and don't need food during the first 48 hours, but will usually drink a little water.

Litter, I always feel the floor with feed for the first 3 days of life. This makes it easier for the chicks to find food. Never use news paper, because it can cause Spraddle Leg. Some times I use paper towel. Use would shavings, or straw.
