The male peafowl is called a (peacock) and a female peafowl is called a (peahen) and a baby peafowl chick is called a (Peachick). A male is fully mature at three years old. Most peahens can lay eggs at two years of age, but a mature male is needed to produce fertile eggs. Breeding takes early spring or early summer, depending where you live of course. A male peafowl has a extravagant tail, which it displays as a part of courtship. The peacocks "tail" is called a "train". The train feathers have a series of eyes that are best seen when the train is
fanned out. Although normally quiet, peafowl become very loud during the mating season. Breeding season is usually in July or August in most parts of the US. Peacocks also molt their tail feathers and begin to regrow a new them for the following season. A peahen can start laying at two years of age. And a male can mate at three years of age. A peahen's average clutch may range from 3 to 6 eggs. Some can even lay up 30 - 40 eggs a year. The eggs are usually laid every other day and laid at night after the sun goes down.
